Security of this proprietary information and client data, as well as equipment and the employees themselves, was compromised by misuse of the existing security system. Often, when a single employee presented his or her card, two, three or more additional employees would enter as the door was held open.
The managers decided that the access control system had to be modified to gain better control of the inbound traffic, and to accurately track who had left the facility.
Solution
A system had to be integrated into the access control system that was nearly transparent, very easy to use and would not cause delays in entering and leaving the building. It also had to cope with numerous visitors and employees who may have forgotten their access cards.Fastlane® optical turnstiles were added to the existing access control and security systems at the employee entrance, the main lobby and a rear door leading to picnic tables, a volleyball court and a smoking area.
How it Works
Fastlane employs arrays of infrared beams, which cross the passage lanes so that they are broken as people pass through. The beams of several lanes in any entrance are pulsed and synchronized so that there is no interference between lanes.Microprocessors at each lane analyze the beam interruptions in an intelligent manner, eliminating nuisance alarms, while not affecting the detection of "tailgaters" who attempt to follow closely behind others.
Employees carry identification badges that serve as proximity access cards. Many wear the card on a chain at chest level, while others attach their cards at hip level. The Fast Lane pedestals were customized to be 48 inches high (the normal is 38 inches high), enabling employees to present their cards with minimum effort.
On approaching the optical turnstile lane, the employee is met with a text message brightly displayed through the black Plexiglas top of the pedestal: "Please Present Card." Upon presentation, with verification from the access control system, the message changes to "Thank You, Proceed." They installed "slimline" proximity readers from HID, Tustin, Calif., onto the face of the turnstiles. The readers then hand off to the Checkpoint Systems, Thorofare, N.J.
The optical turnstile detects each passage. If a person proceeds without first obtaining card authorization, the Fast Lane will detect the unauthorized passage and sound an alarm. The alarm contact automatically activates the security guard's pager to indicate an intrusion. Additionally, the alarm triggers the building's CCTV system.
